ACUPUNCTURE AT ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE

Dr. Richard C. Niemtzow, MD, PhD, MPH

In Memorium | The field of auricular acupuncture remembers and celebrates the contributions and advocacy of Dr. Richard C. Niemtzow (April 18, 1942 –
2 February, 2025), a previously retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, who was also a physician, colleague, mentor, teacher, and leader in the field of acupuncture.

From attending one of the first medical acupuncture for physicians courses (UCLA) to becoming Editor-in-Chief of the American Academy of
Medical Acupuncture’s (AAMA) flagship journal, Medical Acupuncture, Richard was a key advocate for the field.

Beyond his work as council to the National
Institute of Health’s National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Health, his representation of the United States Air Force Medical Service at the NATO Committee on Integrative Medicine, and his Honorary Professorship from the People’s Liberation Army Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Niemtzow is renown for developing and promulgating the technique known as Battlefield Acupuncture — the simple yet effective protocol he developed for rapidly relieving pain. This contribution alone, has literally transformed the lives of millions of people all across
the globe.
